Category E: Excellence in communicating with carers or non-healthcare professionals working with patients and medicine users

In association with Carers UK
This category focused on the needs of the carer in relation to a medicine user’s medicine taking. Initiatives entered into this category were asked to demonstrate how they have helped carers to manage a patient’s medicines or helped them to record, administer or manage medicine taking on behalf of the person for whom they are caring.
Winner:
Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children NHS Trust with Giving Your Child Medicines
Great Ormond Street Hospital receives a large number of enquiries about giving medicines to children, especially as many of their patients are on multiple medicines or complicated treatment regimes.
In order to answer some of these queries, GOSH produced a simple guide to giving medicines to children, including tips and tricks that have worked for other parents. A group of over 100 families were involved in the consultation stage of the project. The guide, a 2-page information sheet, was displayed in the hospital’s pharmacy and made available on the GOSH website.
Initial feedback on the materials was secured through the consultation panel and full evaluation of the activity will take place during Ask About Medicines Week 2007.
Runner-up:
Collaborative Working Group NHS Argyll and Clyde for a Patient Medication Guide.
