Category D: Excellence in reaching diverse populations
In association with Mencap
Different population groups have different information needs, and this category was designed to celebrate excellence in reaching people who are prevented by disability or social situation from easily getting or using mainstream information to help them make decisions about their medicines. In this category it was important for entrants to demonstrate why a particular population was targeted, the challenges inherent in reaching them and what was done to overcome these challenges. Judging was based not on the most ‘deserving’ population but on the approach chosen to reach the population and proven results in reaching them.
Winner:
Cancerbackup with the Cancerbackup Audio Project.
Cancerbackup estimates that over 1 million people in the UK affected by cancer will have a sight problem or print disability which makes it difficult to access vital and complex information about cancer. This can increase feelings of isolation and vulnerability during what is already an emotional and frightening time.
The Cancerbackup Audio Project, working with an external project group, has produced 44 of Cancerbackup’s information booklets on audio cassette. The resources were launched to the press and through a Parliamentary reception.
Early evaluation from the pilot of the project shows a 90-100% satisfaction rate with all aspects of the recordings, with evaluation continuing in the future. Over 700 cassettes have been distributed to the public and 1,000 tapes to healthcare professionals.
Runner-up:
90Ten Healthcare with Steps2Health (Heart of Birmingham Teaching NHS PCT).
