EPP CIC representative with Dr Sheila ShribmanThis programme’s main vehicle is the Chronic Disease Self-Management Course (CDSMC) designed to support people living with long-term conditions develop the confidence and skills they need to manage their conditions better on a daily basis.
 
The course consists of 6 weekly sessions of 2.5 hours each looking at a range of issues associated with living with a long-term condition. Week 5 of the course focuses on medication usage and looks at the purpose of medication, negative effects of medication, the role of GPs and pharmacists in providing medicines information and ways to remember to take medication.
 
Between February 2005 and February 2007, the EPP delivered over 1,900 courses across England to 20,000 people living with long-term conditions. Over 1,700 people living with long-term conditions were trained to deliver the CDSMC. Participants in the courses report an 18% increase in the use of pharmacy services and a 33% increase in the number of participants who felt better prepared for consultations with their health care professionals.
