Category C: Excellence in the Use of Technology

This category covered the use of technology in communicating information about medicines or medicine taking. It included using technology aimed at medicine users (such as initiatives to help them to remember when to take their medicines) or tools to communicate with healthcare professionals (such as web-based training). Judges considered innovative ways technology has been used to reach the target audience.

Winner:

Blackburn with Darwen Primary Care Trust with Text messaging initiative for patients who are hard of hearing.

This initiative was aimed at people who are hard of hearing or deaf and was designed to help them access medicines and services. In particular, people who were hard of hearing or deaf had problems ordering repeat prescriptions.

A mobile phone with text message facility was used and put in the practice reception. Checked on a daily basis, users were able to text through their repeat prescription requests, make appointments or send general enquiries.

Blackburn with Darwen PCT are investigating whether to extend this service to a wider group of patients who may benefit from reminders for blood tests, health checks and appointments.
